Fear the Walking Dead went where the Dead universe had never gone in its third season when it introduced a cosmonaut, via radio, to Victor Strand. The information Strand obtained from the intriguing conversation, however, is leaving the character permanently changed.
Victor Strand knows what many people in Fear the Walking Dead's zombie apocalypse do not: the entire world is gone, there is nothing left. Cosmonaut Vaschenko revealed as much during their poetic exchange. Though some would thing this may leave Strand a bit more reckless, according to Colman Domingo, it has the opposite effect.
"I think it actually makes him a little less careful," Domingo said. "I think that he's always tried to be pragmatic in this world but I think by the time he had the conversation with the Cosmonaut, I really believe that right before he had that conversation with the Cosmonaut, I think he was done. I think he was finished with his journey. I think he got himself in an odd way back home. Back to meeting Abigail, back to somewhere that meant so much to him and that was completely lost. So though he was lost, he was out at sea literally and I think that he was done with his journey."
Then, nearing the point of losing his will to continue, the cosmonaut's voice spoke to Strand and gave him new will continue.
"With this conversation, the Cosmonaut engaged with the gift thing and the world is not dead until you are," Domingo said. "So I guess they gave him the courage to at least go out and fight as he used to but in a different manner. Victor can't afford to be at his own hand in some way and be like, 'Okay, see what this new world has to offer.' Maybe he's not done yet. Maybe he can rebuild in a different way. It's been part of his evolution to change. To change the way, he can't operate with his old systems anymore. So I think that it will make him a bit more dangerous. It will make him a bit more cagey. I think it will make him a bit more slick. I think now that we know it's hard. We also have the number that he's one if you're stranded and now there's the merging of the two I believe."
According to Fear the Walking Dead showrunner Dave Erickson, though, we will never see or hear from cosmonaut Vaschenko again on the AMC series.
