It's known that Agent Coulson returns in the pilot for ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. However, it's been a big mystery as to how his return would be explained, considering he appeared to be very dead in The Avengers after Loki stabbed him. The short version is that Nick Fury faked Agent Coulson's death, which is a theory that fans have long speculated. Why would Nick Fury fake Agent Coulson's death? To motivate The Avengers to go after Loki of course. Apparently, some of the other S.H.I.E.L.D. members (including possible Maria Hill) were in on the plan, but none of The Avenger knew about it. How did Agent Coulson fake his death? Well, it doesn't appear to be that Loki stabbed a Life Model Decoy, as many have speculated. As odd as it sounds, Agent Coulson reportedly had to hold his breath to fool his colleagues. Of course, that doesn't explain how he survived being stabbed through the chest with Loki's scepter.
