J. August Richards as a young superhero in Agents of SHIELD

J. August Richards, who appears in the upcomign pilot episode of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., seems to have intimated in an MTV interview (embedded below) that his character is, in fact, an existing Marvel character--but maybe wasn't originally black in the comics. "[Marvel] very much believe in color blind casting, very much," said Richards. "You can read into that if you like." It wasn't an unprovoked response; it was in response to a direct question that essentially asked if the character could possibly not have looked like Richards before. Still, as they point out in the video, it opens up the wider Marvel Universe to speculation. That's a new wrinkle in a conversation that has largely revolved around only a very few characters, most notably Luke Cage and Rage. Cage has been explicitly denied by Marvel representatives, who also hinted the character might be an original one created for the TV series.
