Final numbers aren't in yet, but it's clear from what's come in already that Universal Pictures's 2 Guns will take #1 at the domestic box office, followed by The Wolverine and The Smurfs 2, just as predicted on Friday. That means that the top three highest-grossing films in U.S. theaters this week are based on comic book source material. It also means that Universal Pictures, who distributed the film based on the BOOM! Studios comic book by Steven Grant and Mateus Santoluoco, will take the #1 spot for the sixth time since the summer movie season began, which Exhibitor Relations rightly points out is "by far the most of any studio." Their other big hits this year have included G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Despicable Me 2, which turned out to be the most profitable film the studio has ever made. Fast & Furious 6 and Identity Thief have also been big hits for the studio this year. The Conjuring, which came in fourth this week, grossed enough this week to cross the $100 million mark.
