During the interview released earlier today with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb, a throwaway comment by the director may have suggested that fans will see even more than the previously-announced three villains in the upcoming spider-sequel. After having extolled the virtues of Jamie Foxx as Electro, Webb was asked what other villains might show up in the film, while footage of Green Goblin and Rhino played. "We have Paul Giamatti playing The Rhino," Webb said. "And we'll get some other villains but it's really Electro is our main show for the villain this time around." The thing that stuck out to us there was that as far as we know, there's Electro, The Rhino and Green Goblin. That's three--but after naming two of the three, Webb said "other villains," plural. Obviously, it could be that he's referring to other villains besides Electro, but the phrasing leaves some ambiguity--and since Felicity Jones, who has previously described her role as "The Goblin's girlfriend," recently made comments in a Collider interview that many have interpreted as confirmation that her character will eventually be a costumed type, the Black Cat rumors that have dogged her almost from day one don't seem so farfetched. Along with yesterday's hints at Shocker, could we be seeing the Sinister Six taking shape in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 before that film's script is even completed? Certainly with two more planned sequels and a pair of spinoffs, the Spider-Man universe is going to get more complex, quickly. Suddenly it makes sense that Shailene Woodley's Mary Jane Watson was pulled from the movie--it seems there's quite a bit to do for franchise building in this flick.
