One of the heroes who fans got most hung up on in the first three X-Men films was Colossus. Teased but never really used in a big way, the Russian man-mountain who can transform his flesh into nearly-impervious metal with a thought always seemed like a character just begging for a big-screen treatment, where his transformation could be turned into an awesome effect. Well, now (courtesy of Empire magazine's day-long countdown of 25 variant covers) we've seen our first really good look at a powered-up Colossus from the new film and it's...surprising.

When you look back at the character's appearance in X2: X-Men United, Daniel Cudmore transformed into something that looked a bit more like the comic book version of the character...but the effects that were in place at the time were so mediocre compared to what we have today that it's hard to re-watch that film without chuckling a bit at how Colossus looks. The new Colossus (still Cudmore) looks a lot sleeker, a lot more convincing...but without the striations in his metal, he also looks a bit more like Bloodshot (who's reportedly got a movie in the works, and it might be interesting to compare the two if that ever makes it into production) than Colossus. Especially when you put that black t-shirt thing on him. X-Men: Days of Future Past is due in theaters on May 23. Another trailer is expected this week to coincide with the massive entertainment-industry ad push of Super Bowl Sunday. The film reunites X-Men director Bryan Singer and his original cast, including Sir Ian McKellen, Halle Berry and Sir Patrick Stewart, with the cast of X-Men: First Class, including Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy.
