It's rare that a book creates such an addictive world so quickly, but Backways #1 manages that feat and so much more in its amazing debut.
Backways #1 comes from the team of Justin Jordan and Eleonora Carlini by way of AfterShock Comics and features a cast of quirky characters in an odd but familiar world. It's actually the grounded outward setting that helps the supernatural elements land with impact, and that back and forth approach is what helps set Backways apart.
The central mystery of the series is delivered within the first two pages, quickly setting up the premise without wasting page space on tons of exposition. It's shortly after this that you are introduced to Anna, who is best described as Velma of Scooby Doo fame if she had less tact but more survival instinct.
She's the perfect person to lead readers through this fantastical world, one that Jordan has filled with characters both delightful and a tad creepy. Readers will meet two in particular in the first issue, and if they are any indication of what's to come, Backways will have no problem keeping people's attention.
That includes the wonderful Coyote Bones. Coyote is hilarious and oddly enough very frugal, and trust us when we say she will be cosplayed at future conventions for years to come. She's one of the best parts of the book hands down, and we can't wait to see more from her.
That is partly due to Carlini's beautiful art. Carlini's characters are so full of expression and charm, even the creepy ones. That extends to the world as well, which is filled with warm oranges, deep purples, piercing blues, and the stunning visuals pull you forward in a fit do see more of what it has to offer.
Backways was a pleasant surprise, delivering addicting characters in a world you want to get lost in. With a central mystery constantly pulling you forward, this book seems to have it all, and definitely deserves a chance.
Once you discover this Narnia meets Harry Potter world, the last thing you'll want to do is leave.0comments
