The Charmed series delighted fans thanks to a unique mix of humor, witchcraft, and family drama. The new series from Dynamite retains some of those traits but hasn't found the perfect mixture just yet.
Spoilers incoming for Charmed #3, so you've been warned.
One of the most popular aspects of Charmed was the unique sisterhood that Phoebe, Piper, and Paige found themselves a part of. Their personal relationships and interactions were as important as the demons, warlords, and wizards they were fighting. Fans of the original series should have quite the easy time getting settled in here then, as the book thus far feels like an extended episode. The banter feels natural and true to the original's tone, and thus far the characterization of the sisters and supporting characters like Leo (who's in full white lighter mode) are following suit.
The arc's plot hooks you enough to keep things moving, but as of
The biggest downside to the book though is the visuals. It wouldn't be as noticeable if you didn't have the actual actresses on the covers, but because you do you have a direct comparison. The interiors don't benefit from this, and often times it is difficult to figure out who is talking to whom. When you have to read the text bubbles hunting for a name so you can get a read on who's actually talking, that's a problem. There are moments though that the likenesses shine through, and to be clear having to recreate those likenesses on every page is not an enviable task. Still, it has to remain consistent, as when it doesn't you are immediately pulled out of the story.
These characters are just like you remember, and the tone is perfectly in keeping with the series fans loved. Heroes are only as good as the odds they face though, and that needs much more depth. If that can happen over time and the art can find a consistent groove, this can be a truly fun series. It's just not quite there yet.
Rating 2 out of 5 Stars.
