Suicide Squad Harley

Of all the reinventions in Suicide Squad, the one that's attracted the most attention is Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. Inspired by the Batman: Arkham game series and the New 52's reinvention of the character, Harley doesn't wear the jester suit that defined her appearance for years.

But why does she look the way she does? Well, in an interview with the New York Times, both Robbie and director David Ayer touched on the appearance a bit.

Saying that Harley is "wearing hot pants because they're sparkly and fun," Robbie indicated that she didn't feel it was about sexualizing the character; it wasn't about guys looking at her.

"I didn't think denim overalls would be appropriate for that character," Ayer said, adding that in the post-Arkham world the sexy Harley look is "part of the iconography."

It feels good to be bad…Assemble a team of the world's most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government's disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren't picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it's every man for himself?

Suicide Squad hits theaters August 5, 2016.
