Having Superman and Batman fight on screen sounds like a fun idea, but it's challenging coming up with a good, believable reason for the altercation. This is where Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) comes in. The criminal mastermind puts together an elaborate that relies on convincing Bruce Wayne/Batman (Ben Affleck) that Superman is a global threat and convincing Clark Kent/Superman (Henry Cavill) that The Dark Knight is a dangerous vigilante that needs to be stopped.

"Alexander "Lex" Luthor was created by Superman creators [Jerry] Siegel and [Joel] Shuster in 1940. In his original incarnation, Lex was an evil genius with a seemingly unlimited resources, including a flying city, Kryptonite lasers, and prehistoric monsters. While initially driven by wealth and power, Lex ultimately became known for his intense hatred of Superman. A hatred predicated on the belief that humans needed to decide their own destiny and an alien from above only made us complacent. In the 1980s, John Byrne helped cement Lex as a multi-national corporate magnate. He's even occasionally suited up in a Kryptonite-powered suit to fight meta-humans, like Superman

"In BvS, Lex Luthor Jr. is the son of cold businessman, Alexander Luthor, and the wunderkind left in charge of LexCorp. Sporting flowing locks pulled from the '90s iteration of Luthor, this flashy take on Lex is motivated the same was as the classic iteration: A need to kill God to prove humanity is the ultimate power. Of course, Lex may have flown to close to the Sun in his quest, interfacing with alien technology he doesn't fully-understand "

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City's own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis's most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it's ever known before.

Directed by Zack Snyder, the film also stars Oscar nominees Amy Adams ("American Hustle," "Man of Steel") as Lois Lane, Jesse Eisenberg ("The Social Network") as Lex Luthor, Diane Lane ("Unfaithful," "Man of Steel") as Martha Kent, and Laurence Fishburne ("What's Love Got to Do with It," "Man of Steel") as Perry White; Oscar winners Jeremy Irons ("Reversal of Fortune") as Alfred, and Holly Hunter ("The Piano") as Senator Finch; and Gal Gadot (the "Fast and Furious" films) as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince.
