Gotham had a big episode last night, which saw the classic Batman vs. Joker rivalry played out Gotham style, with young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) taking on the resurrected Jerome (Cameron Monaghan).
Now that Jerome is back on Gotham, actor Cameron Monaghan is free to open up and talk about the character again, having had to hold his tongue for a year or so until the resurrection reveal came out. And of course, one of the most important topics of discussion about playing The (quasi-)Joker is the laugh.
Monaghan's Joker laugh has been fan-approved ever since we first got to see the villain come to life in a haunting interrogation scene during Gotham season 1. In the video interview below, Monaghan talks about nailing down his Joker laugh, and which previous Joker actor provided the guidance he would follow:
Star Wars: The Last Jedi star Mark Hamill has truly made a symphony out of Joker laughs, using them to express all sorts of emotional nuances. Monaghan has been a good student of the technique, and has used it to make Jerome a well-rounded Joker package: he's able to be frightening and funny from moment to moment and use his laugh to clearly broadcast which one it is.
Most Gotham fans (or general Batman fans) would probably agree that Cameron Monaghan is a good candidate to play the younger version of The Joker, and it's his insight into the character and the performances that have made Joker an icon that has earned him his spot.
