It seems Batman and Wonder Woman's latest team-up could cause big issues for the Dark Knight's engagement to Catwoman.

Spoilers incoming for Batman #39, so if you haven't read it yet you've been warned.

In Batman #39 the Dark Knight and Wonder Woman deliver on a vow they made ages ago to The Gentle Man. That vow includes entering his realm and taking his place to fight the endless hordes while he takes a brief respite. Batman and Wonder Woman are drawn much closer thanks to the ordeal, and the issue closes with the two heroes about to kiss.

So, how did we get here? Well, it turns out an unknown detail might have been their undoing. The deal they made was with The Gentle Man, a warrior who protects our realm from the hordes of Gehenna. The monstrosities there are derived from the sin of man. As a result, they are always trying to break through to our realm and are endless in number. The only thing standing in their way is The Gentle Man, who has been fighting them for thousands of years.

Well, thousands of years his time. See, he tells Catwoman in our realm that he's been gone for about a year. Time passes differently in that realm, so while he's been fighting for thousands of years, he has only aged a year. That means in the few hours that Wonder Woman and Batman have been gone, they've already been fighting for years.

10 years in fact.

As the two huddle together in a cave during one of the brief lulls in battle, they find themselves fearing this could be the end, as the portal can only be opened from the other side. It draws them even closer together, and they look as if they are about to kiss as the issue comes to a close.

Batman is, of course, engaged to Catwoman, so it remains to be seen how things will play out for the wedded couple to be.
