LEGO Batman Movie Director Reveals Christopher Nolan Dark Knight Easter Egg

The LEGO Batman Movie is probably about as tonally distanced from Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy as two films about the same character can be. And yet, The LEGO Batman Movie does include a small nod to Nolan's Batman films and it probably went unnoticed by most fans.

The LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay revealed on Twitter that the animated film's version of Gotham City. This was partly because McKay himself grew up in the "Windy City," but it also meant to be a nod to Nolan's version of Gotham, which was mostly filmed in Chicago.

"We designed Gotham City to look like Chicago because Nolan shot Chicago for GC (mostly) and I'm from Chicago," McKay tweeted.

Nolan's Batman movies left an unmistakable mark on the Batman mythos that even The LEGO Batman Movie can't deny.

McKay will get to take his own stab at a live-action version of the Batman universe when he makes his live-action directorial debut on Warner Bros.' Nightwing movie.

In the irreverent spirit of fun that made The LEGO Movie a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that ensemble - LEGO Batman - stars in his own big-screen adventure. In The LEGO Batman Movie, There are big changes brewing in Gotham, but if Batman (Will Arnett) wants to save the city from the Joker's (Zach Galifianakis) hostile takeover, he may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up. Maybe his superhero sidekick Robin (Michael Cera) and loyal butler Alfred (Ralph Fiennes) can show him a thing or two.

The LEGO Batman Movie was directed by Chris McKay, written by Seth Grahame-Smith, Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, Jared Stern and John Whittington. The film was a spin-off of The LEGO Movie and was produced by The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

The LEGO Batman Movie voice cast includes Will Arnett, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, and Ralph Fiennes.

The LEGO Batman Movie made over $310 million worldwide at the box office. The film is now available on Digital HD and will be available on Blu-ray on June 13, 2017.
