Wonder Woman Director Has Not Signed On For Sequel

Contrary to previous reports, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins has not yet signed on to direct the film's sequel.

Negotiations between Jenkins and Warner Bros. will begin soon. Jenkins should have significant leverage in negotiating the deal following Wonder Woman's record-breaking opening weekend at the box office.

Star Gal Gadot signed a multi-picture deal with Warner Bros. to play Wonder Woman, locking her pay for the role into place. Jenkins signed a single film deal, which means that bringing her back for the second movie could cost the studio millions more.

Jenkins' single-picture deal is said to be standard practice for Warner Bros. when dealing with director's taking on their first big budget project, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Jenkins' only film credit for directing prior to Wonder Woman was the low budget Monster in 2003.

Warner Bros. may have been taken by surprise by Wonder Woman's success. The film was initially projected for a $65 million opening weekend and surpassed all expectations by earning $103 million in its first three days.

Warner Bros. has been employing a "wait and see" tactic that goes hand in hand with their director-centric mindset for the DC Extended Universe. This bucks the Hollywood tradition of assuming franchise success, planning and dating sequels well ahead of release, and signing directors to multi-picture deals early on. This tactic is why Man of Steel 2, the sequel to a successful big-budget franchise film, is still without a director.
