There was a running theme for DC Comics this week, one centered around getting to know the characters behind the cowls, capes, and shields that they are so often defined by, and Trinity #1 by Francis Manapul definitely fit that bill.

In many ways, Trinity #1 is supposed to be a hopping on point for new readers who haven't been picking up the individual Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman series, and in that regard, it works quite well. There might still be a bit of confusion though, especially with anything related to the previous Superman's death and where this new Superman comes from, but overall Manapul does a good job of getting readers up to speed.

While the book is well written, it's hard not to focus on Manpul's astounding artwork. From the panel layouts to the characters themselves, this book is breathtaking, and not just in the pencils, but in the coloring as well. It even makes rainbow Batman look threatening, and that's not an easy feat.

While it's easy to get lost in the vivid imagery, the story unfolding is one worth telling, even if it's lacking in action. These three aren't the solidified unit seen in previous Justice League renditions, and as such there are some worthwhile differences to explore. There's a great deal of character development to mine out of that circumstance, especially evident in the conversation between Diana and Lois, who continues to be the MVP of pretty much every book she's featured in.

Trinity #1 is smartly written and features a healthy dose of humor alongside its storyline setup. It builds a nice foundation for future issues, and if the book continues to pair great relationship development between the three leads with these stellar visuals, Trinity will also continue to require a spot on your monthly pull list.
