Coming off of the big revelations in Greg Rucka's "The Lies" arc, it seemed like it would be difficult to maintain that momentum with a trip back into the past. If might be if it were in anyone else's hands but Ruckas and he proves yet again that he has a magnificent grasp on the character.
Spoilers incoming for Wonder Woman #12, so you've been warned.
The creative team has done a remarkable job with instilling some depth and actual camaraderie into Wonder Woman's supporting cast. For the first time in a long time it feels like fans are actually getting to know Etta Candy, Barbara Ann Minerva, and Steve Trevor in a really way, as opposed to simply knowing they exist and their place in Wonder Woman's world. It's that sort of depth that allows a subplot in last issue's Wonder Woman book with Etta Candy to be as interesting as the main plot with Diana, and it continues throughout issue #9.
The year one story arc has managed to feel grounded even in the more fantastical elements, and that is due to how charming and delightful Wonder Woman remains throughout. She's endlessly endearing and curious about man's world but it never diminishes her intelligence or capabilities.
Part of what makes it all work is the stellar artwork of Nicola Scott, who gives Diana a visual grace in her movements and a confident yet tender demeanor in her expressions. This is a great chance to point out just phenomenal the art team has been on both interconnecting Wonder Woman series and Nicola's art compliments Liam Sharpe's pencils on the alternating story particularly well.
The long-awaited appearance of a known Wonder Woman rival gives the book a great hook for the next entry, and this is the most well rounded the character has been for some time. In short, Wonder Woman is more than deserving of a spot on your pull list.
