An interstellar shooter that puts players in control of sleek, space-navigating vehicles, Everspace tasks players with navigating a dangerous environment full of hostile opposition and massive obstacles to avoid.

The game characterizes it as a rogue-like space shooter that will offer the option to turn on perma-death for those who want a bit harder challenge up in space. It might take a bit to get used to the gameplay, and players will likely die a lot, something that developer and publisher ROCKFISH Games seems to expect. The Hardcore Mode that the perma-death will include didn't make it into the game in time for the full release date on Friday, but it's promised to be included in future updates.

Currently, the game only has a singleplayer functionality, but many players from the early stages of the game up until now are already hoping for some multiplayer modes to be released in later updates. Despite it only being singleplayer now, the solo story mode and missions are crafted to offer an ever-changing experience that creates new challenges and obstacles to navigate during each player run. There are upgrades to be made to your ship's capabilities, enemy fighters to shoot down, and a whole universe to explore on your way through the combat-intensive title.

One of the most easily recognizable elements of the game that'll make it stand out is the graphics and the audio. Both of these vital elements are executed superbly in Everspace. Made with Unreal Engine 4, the motions are sharp and the space environment looks absolutely stunning. Larger actions such as flying around and seeing another much larger craft emerging out of thin space look seamless as well. All of the sounds that come from corresponding actions such as firing lasers, exploding enemies, and speeding up sound exactly as they should in a space game, which may sound like a given, but it can be pretty distracting when games try to veer off too far from what the expected sounds are.

In a full list of elements that made it into the full game that includes a story mode and achievements, one of the most notable changes is the addition of virtual reality support for the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. It'd certainly be a treat to see such an impressive-looking game like this through the lens of VR, something that many players were hoping for during feedback sessions.

Everspace is currently available on Steam for $29.99.
