Collider's Dave Trumbore recently sat down with Resident Evil producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi leading up to the release of Resident Evil: Vendetta, and through their conversation we get a clearer idea of how the film reboot is shaping up. It would appear that as the games have finally made a (successful) return to their survival-horror roots with Resident Evil 7, the movies are going quite the opposite direction, focusing instead on action.

Before we go into the actual substance of the interview we should make it clear, as Collider made a point to do, that nothing said here should be taken as gospel. In Kobayashi's own words, "nothing has been decided yet. No script, no storyline, no director, no cast members." With that out of the way, let's take a peek at Kobayashi's vision for the Resident Evil reboot.

After confirming that the reboot would feature a new director and star, leaving behind Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich respectively, Kobayashi confirmed that he wouldn't mind seeing the films continue along the same spiritual vein as the original six, stating: "I personally like Paul W.S. Anderson's [direction] on the live-action [films]. Stuff like that, I would like to see more action."

Whether this is good news or bad news depends on the type of Resident Evil fan you are. Did you like Resident Evil 2 and 7 more than you liked Resident Evil 4? If so, then this is probably sad news for you since we're leaving the creepy-crawly survival-horror ambience behind us in favor of something more flashy and more in your face.

If, however, you believe that Resident Evil 4 is where the series took a turn into true greatness, then Anderson's films have likely delighted you, and a continued focus on that action-horror style is something that you'd like to see more of as well. If that be you, then this reboot could be shaping up in your favor.

Again, Kobayashi does not have the final word. He's here to make sure that the worlds of Resident Evil are faithfully realized in the films, but he doesn't have a direct influence on the script, story, or focus. We'll have to wait to hear how the reboot is officially coming together, so stay tuned to WWG for more.
