I'll admit, the original Destiny never really clicked with me. As a shooter it was fine, but the game fell short of its lofty MMORPG aspirations. I need a story with my RPGs, and Destiny's was confusing and fragmented, with most of its backstory hidden away in collectible Grimoire Cards. The game also quickly became an overly-demanding grind if you wanted to truly achieve anything in it. Well, it sounds like Bungie is doing everything they can to entice players like me to try out Destiny 2.

Destiny 2 director Luke Smith gave the following blunt reply when GamesRadar asked what the game's most significant new feature was

"I think broadly speaking it's probably the inclusion of a story. It's actually focusing on having a followable narrative, and having a big sort of storyline, epic scenario. Layering the story content in a way we haven't done yet for Destiny. [We have the] main campaign, that's what the trailers are about. Then, below that, you have adventures that are stories about the worlds, the planets and the particular enemies contained therein - it doesn't directly relate to the Red War, it tells a different story."

An actual followable narrative! How novel! In a separate interview with Finder, Destiny 2 project lead Mark Noseworthy promised the new game will be more accessible, and less of a grind.

"We've always wanted Destiny to be compatible with real life, and that means for some people they're going to play every night as they're preferred hobby, and that's amazing. For some folks, they're going to pick it up, play the campaign, have fun with some Strikes and say, 'You know what? I've had fun, I'm going to put it down and play football with my friends or play another game.' And then you have the player who just doesn't play Destiny.

We've designed Destiny 2 to be a fresh start for all types of players, so that all three of those player types can all come in at the same place and start with this new story. We're making sure that all players, new, returning, lapsed, will get reintroduced to the world of Destiny: the story, the place, the mechanics, everyone is going to be reintroduced to it."

Well, I like what I'm hearing – hopefully Bungie actually follows through. Destiny 2 does seem more approachable than its predecessor, but the discussion surrounding the game can still feel a little opaque. We shall see.

Destiny 2 hits Xbox One and PS4 on September 6, and the PC on October 24.
