It's great to dream big as a game developer – but making that dream come true in an actual working product is something different altogether. Not to mention that it takes a great deal of effort.

With that, one of the surprises revealed during Microsoft's E3 press conference, the 4A Games follow-up to its hit Metro franchise, Exodus, was initially put on the backburner because the team thought it couldn't be done – and this is after it worked on the likes of Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light and its HD package Metro: Redux.

The team had actually kept the game secret for some time, since it was technically working on a AAA property, but as an indie studio with only a handful of people in an overseas office. In fact, creative director Andriy Prokhorov told Polygon that he didn't think the game could be made.

"Why have we kept silent for so long? Because three years ago, we thought this game was almost impossible," he noted.

He also noted that the author of the Metro series creator, Dmitry Glukhovsky, played a crucial part when it came to pushing the team to getting the project up and running, as well as trying new things that stood out from previous games in the series. As a result, they figured out their way around certain problems – and crafted one hell of a sequel in the process.

"It's really hard work, because [Glukhovsky] is very passionate in person", Prokhorov noted. "He's always trying to get us to do more. 'Let's do that!' Well, you know, it's technically not impossible, but it's just not possible. 'But why?!'"

Persistence was certainly key for a project such as this, and it's paid off really well, based on the response that came from the trailer that was featured a few weeks ago. We'll still have to wait a bit to see how the final product pans out, as it's not set for release for a while, but that gives 4A Games the time it needs to make that it's ready to go.

Metro Exodus will release next year for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
