The most recent patch for the PC version of the asymmetrical horror game Dead by Daylight looks to change the way that Killers can achieve a win through their trials, and more importantly, how those Killers will rank up or down depending on their performance.

When playing as either a Killer or a Survivor in Dead by Daylight, there's a point system called Bloodpoints that also acts as an in-game currency for items and perks. Players amass these Bloodpoints by completing in-game objectives, points that also determine how many pips they achieve, checkmarks that raise or lower their rank. The point system can sometimes cause grinding for points in matches to be common and can result in unhealthy gameplay, so the most recent patch looks to change that.

"Prior to patch 1.5.3 Killer win conditions were determined through point gain: less than 7,000 Bloodpoints gained in a match resulted in losing 1 rank pip, 7,000 to 9,999 was considered a tie with no rank pips lost, 10,000 to 19,999 was considered a win granting 1 rank pip and finally 20,000 granted 2 rank pips," the patch notes began. "Unfortunately this did not satisfy most Killers as it does not directly reflect the amount of killing/hooking done in a match. As of patch 1.5.3 our Killer win/lose conditions change to reflect our Killers' visceral game play. Killers need to score Killer Goals to satisfy the entity."

A maximum of four Killer Goals can be earned from each survivor meaning that a Killer can accomplish 16 goals max per match. These Killer Goals, as well as a disqualification from Killer Goals, can come in several different forms as seen in detail below:

  1. Hooking: For each hook phase, you gain +1 Killer Goals.
    • First time hooked +1
    • Struggle +1
    • Sacrifice +2 (+1 for the phase and +1 for the player's death)
  2. Memento Mori: Performing a Momento Mori on a Survivor grants +2 Killer Goals. (+ 1 for the action and +1 for the player's death)Bleed out: Bleeding out a Survivor grants +1 Killer Goals. (+0 for the bleed out and +1 for the player's death)
  3. Survivor Disconnect Loading: Survivors who disconnect during loading will grant Killers +2 Killer Goals each. (Killers should still be able to satisfy their Killer Goals when this happens, but as the Killer did not play against these Survivors he is only granted half the points)
  4. Survivor Disconnect during Trial: Survivors who disconnect after 5 minutes of the Trial will grant the Killer +4 Killer Goals as they would be depriving the Killer of his Killer Goals.
  5. Killer Disconnects: All Killer Goals are negated and the Killer is awarded 0 Killer Goals.

At less than eight pips per match, the Killer will lose one rank pip. Eight goals will result in a no-gain-no-loss scenario, 9-15 Goals will result in one rank pip gained, and the full 16 Goals will result in two rank pips gained.

Dead by Daylight devs have said in their recent dev stream that Survivors will get a similar rank rework in the future. Some players are concerned that this update isn't what Killers needed as it'll encourage camping the hook of the third Survivor to ensure that they get enough Killer Goals completed. Devs said that they have acknowledged complaints such as these and are looking to players for feedback on the new system.
