Upcoming PS4-exclusive zombie survival game Days Gone may look a little familiar, but the game's developers are at least hoping the game won't be predictable. Depending on the weather, time of day, and various dynamic events, the game's missions should play out differently every time you try them.
For instance, in the Days Gone E3 demo, protagonist Deacon sets off in search of somebody called Manny, who got lost on a supply run. Our original look at the demo took place at night in the rain and saw Deacon get ambushed early, leading to a lot of straight-ahead action. Ah, but in a recently-released alternate version of the mission, it's daytime, snowing, and Deacon lucks out and completely avoids the ambush, leading to a totally different playthrough. That touch of randomness is an interesting aspect, which could really help set Days Gone apart from the rest of the zombie pack.
Thankfully, Days Gone developer SIE Bend Studio agrees. In the most recent issue of GamesTM (thanks to WCCF Tech for the transcription) the studio's lead programmer Darren Chisum revealed they have an entire team devoted to these dynamic events:
"Yes, every mission will have the same goal – the same end point – but there are a lot of different systems in Days Gone that just operate out in the open world, and those can play out in so many different ways depending on how you deal with them. The ambush clothesline is a good example of that, and there are many more.
We have a dedicated team at Bend Studio that's making these kind of events and creating ways to place them around the world, depending on where the player is, what level they are, and what they're doing. It's not always going to be humans, it's not always going to be Freakers – it's sometimes going to be both, or animals might get involved. Infected animals aren't scripted, they happen in the world depending on what time of day it is, what you're doing in the world, and what the weather's doing, too. In general, the Freakers prefer nighttime and wetter environments, so that's always something you should keep in mind."
Here's hoping Days Gone really is as varied as the developers are promising. Triple-A games could stand to be a little more unpredictable.
Days Gone arrives exclusively on the PlayStation 4 sometime in first half of 2018.
