We're not sure if Bethesda was just taking the opportunity to hype the game in time for QuakeCon, or if it was just its natural time to hop into the Steam Early Access service. But, nevertheless, here it is – you can play Quake Champions now!

The publisher has announced that the multiplayer-oriented shooter, which was announced last year during its pre-E3 showcase, is now available as part of the Steam Early Access program. The game is set up to be a free-to-play title, but if you want access now, you'll need to throw down $30 for the "Champions Pack" in order to take part. That's really for the best, as that'll enable you to play all the characters that are available within the game.

Quake Champions features a number of different champions, each with great weapons and abilities that prove to be quite useful in combat, and you'll also gain access to more characters that will be available in the future, at no additional charge.

Bethesda did note that once the "full" release happens sometime in 2018, the game price will go up to $40 to unlock all the champions, so you're actually getting everything for a relatively cool bargain, so it never hurts to double down.

The team didn't say when the game would release next year, but when it does arrive the full version will include "new systems that deepen the meta-game," to keep things fresh. There will also be patches added to this particular version of the game, in the hopes of boosting game performance, as well as keeping a steady balance and making improvements to multiplayer as it goes along.

From what we've played thus far, Quake Champions is a lot of fun, and the game will get heavy focus this weekend during QuakeCon, in a tournament where over a million dollars in prizes is up for grabs. It never hurts to practice up for next year, though, when another competition is more than likely to come around.

The game is available for purchase either through its official Steam page, or through the Bethesda game launcher. Either way, get ready for a whole lot of fragging.
