Lawbreakers, the newly released first-person shooter from Boss Key Productions, is free to play on Steam this weekend. Steam users can download the game for free from September 28th to October 2nd, no strings attached. On top of that, the shooter is on sale at a 25% discount for PC users only.

The promotion follows a couple of updates, limiting the number of roles a team can use in Quick Play matches and a new night mode for the Promenade map. Version 1.3's changes aim to increase the variety of viable strategies and reduce the frustration players might feel when playing against teams stacked with the same role. The limit will also compile user data and feedback for the upcoming Competitive Ranked mode, according to the developer.

The free weekend and updates are consistent with creator Cliff Bleszinski's continued effort to keep the game alive, especially with rival Overwatch and the freshly released Destiny 2 in the same arena. In a previous interview with GameSpot, the developer also noted that the success won't come overnight. He sees the game having a similar trajectory to Warframe, a third-person action game that also started with low figures before finding a wider player base.

"It's a marathon. Not a sprint. We're going to keep iterating and keep working on it. At the end of the day, I didn't want to make the exact same archetypes that everybody else did. I wanted to make a game that was first and foremost a shooter for shooter players."

This promotion and recent updates may be a part of the game's marketing overhaul, mentioned in the same interview, to welcome new players and "help people understand the appeal of the game."

Lawbreakers is now available on PlayStation 4 and PC.
