The Tomb Raider Games Have Sold Remarkably Well For Square Enix

Square Enix has some big plans lined up for 2018, including the (eventual) arrival of Kingdom Hearts III, as well as a lot of stuff revolving around the Final Fantasy franchise. But don't be surprised if the next Tomb Raider game works its way into those plans.

That's because the new Tomb Raider games that have come from the developers at Crystal Dynamics have done exceptionally well for the company, despite initial doubts that they wouldn't be big hits.

Speaking with GamesIndustry International, Square Enix CEO Yoskue Matsuda confirmed that the series was performing up to standard for the company, with Rise of the Tomb Raider selling almost seven million units in its lifetime. The original Tomb Raider, which rebooted the series back in 2013, has also done well, selling over 11 million units across a number of platforms.

The initial doubts over Rise of the Tomb Raider came back with its release, when the game was first launched for the Xbox One as part of an exclusivity deal with Microsoft. But it eventually came out for PC and PlayStation 4 as well, and expanded its reach.

And even though it didn't quite match the numbers of the original Tomb Raider, Square Enix is pleased with how Rise of the Tomb Raider turned around.

The original Tomb Raider saw the benefit of playing out to two different generations of gamers. The original title arrived initially for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, and a remastered edition came out for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 a short time after that.

So it's obvious that Lara Croft's adventures will continue. We've got the big screen adaptation coming next year, featuring Alicia Vikander in the title role; and there are rumors about a third game already, although we haven't heard anything official yet. Perhaps we'll see an announcement soon enough, especially with The Game Awards 2017 and PlayStation Experience coming up next week.

In the meantime, definitely give Rise of the Tomb Raider a run-through. It's easily still one of the best adventure games out there.
