An all-new poster for the upcoming Tomb Raider film hit social media today, showing just how far the studio is going to recreate the game that the film is based on. Alicia Vikander portrays video game legend Lara Croft, an adventurer who served as the genre's answer to heroes like Indiana Jones for generations. Check out the poster below:

First portrayed on the big screen in 2001 by Angelina Jolie, Vikander's Lara Croft follows a storyline just a bit closer to that of the more recent entries in the franchise. In Tomb Raider, Croft finds herself stranded on the very island where her father disappeared, and must navigate her way around the otherworldly elements of a jungle-covered island to escape. Of course, she's not alone -- and that's only where her troubles begin.

There's been quite a bit of Tomb Raider news this week, with a new game announced for development just this past week. The mystery title has plenty of long-time fans wondering what's next for the franchise, with some going as far as deciphering the tweet shared by the official Tomb Raider account. Right now, fans are guessing that a hidden word spells out a possible new title for the next game: Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

The film was written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons, and directed by Norweigian film maker Roar Uthaug. Joining Vikander on the film's roster are Daniel Wu as Lu Ren, Walton Goggins as Mathias Vogel, and Domonic West as Lord Richard Croft. The film is being distributed by Warner Bros.

Tomb Raider is set to release on March 16th, 2018 in theaters and IMAX. For a deeper dive on modern-day Lara Croft, those unaquainted with the new games should check out 2013's Tomb Raider and 2015's Rise of the Tomb Raider as well.
