While we wait – for however long it takes – for Activision to announce an official Spyro the Dragon compilation for PlayStation 4, we have something that we can pass the time with.

A crafty coder by the name of Valefor has managed to put together a remake of the original PlayStation Spyro game for download, under the name Spyro the Dragon: Artisans Revisited. The game actually shows a great deal of development promise, as it showcases what levels and animations would look like utilizing Unreal Engine 4 technology.

Although the release is more of a Christmas themed one and not the original map that Valefor was putting together, it does give you an idea of what he's doing with the project development-wise, as it shows the potential of Spyro within an Unreal Engine build. What's more, it could very well inspire that aforementioned Spyro the Dragon collection that we want so bad.

But don't go expecting Valefor to do more work, as he made it clear that he has no intentions of recreating any additional environments from the original Spyro game, mainly because, well, it can be shut down any minute by a cease-and-desist from Activision.

Still, at least you get to check some of it out, and, again, you never know who it might inspire at Activision to get to work on an official game. You can download it in full here, and see Spyro as he attacks sheep, collects gems and has fun within the environment.

Quick note, though – you can't use a controller with the game. The control method, which utilizes your PC keyboard, is as follows:

  • Move – W,S,A,D
  • Camera control – Mouse
  • Fire breath – E
  • Charge – Shift
  • Jump – Space
  • Jump to glide – Space x 2
  • Stop gliding – Space while gliding
  • Pause menu – Escape

We'll let you know if Activision ever considers an official Spyro the Dragon release.
