The Nintendo Switch has become an ideal platform for the company, selling millions of units and providing a great deal of accessibility for both home and on-the-go gaming. But it's also an ideal platform when it comes to adding new content to existing games – something that couldn't easily be said for Nintendo platforms in the past.

While speaking with IGN, Shinya Takahashi, who serves as entertainment planning and development division general manager for Nintendo, explains how the DLC model has actually improved with the company's latest system.

"I think that titles that you download when you purchase have a very good compatibility with the idea of additional content," he said. "I believe the Nintendo Switch, compared to most of our recent hardware, makes some of the best use of the ability to download titles in their entirety, since it's a console that you can also carry as a portable." (That said, though, some games go a little excessive on memory cards, such as L.A. Noire and NBA 2K18, which require a memory card in order to run on the hardware.)

"We certainly like to think about which software titles would have a great value for additional content to be added."

And there's also room for the hardware itself to expand as well, especially based upon players' usage of the JoyCon controllers. "One of the great strengths of the Nintendo Switch is that though you can play it as a console, you can also separate these two controllers from the hardware," said Takahashi. "This gives us a lot of possibilities that we could consider for the future in terms of what you could attach.

"I think that that would be a really good time for us to think about some very different colors or designs applied to (JoyCons). That might be interesting."

That's not confirmed yet, though. And even if Nintendo doesn't adapt the hardware anytime soon, Takahashi is still pleased by its tremendous results on the gaming market. "There's a lot of joy to be had from handmaking something yourself or having all of those customizable possibilities, and we absolutely embrace that. We love to see that," he concluded.

The Nintendo Switch is available now.
