Marvel Comics has provided ComicBook.com with an exclusive first look at CAGE! #1, the first issue of the long in development four-issue miniseries from writer/artist Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory, and Hotel Transylvania.
CAGE! is a miniseries that uses Tartakovsky’s distinctive cartooning style to bring Luke Cage back to his roots, which were heavily inspired by the blaxploitation cinema of the 1970s. Luke Cage protects the streets of his home from the criminal element and, in his spare time, plays some basketball with the neighborhood kids...though the preview makes it clear he may not know his own strength.
CAGE! was a hotly anticipated comic when it was announced in 2007, but fell off of Marvel's publishing schedule for years. Marvel finally announced plans to publish the series as part of the Fall 2016 Marvel NOW! publishing initiative. The release is nicely timed for just after the Marvel's Luke Cage television series debuts on Netflix.
Check out the CAGE! #1 preview pages in the gallery below. CAGE! #1 goes on sale in comic book stores and through digital comics apps on Oct. 5, 2016.
