Agents of SHIELD has shaken up the show's status quo a great deal this season, which includes Agent Coulson's change of role within the team, a change he's still adjusting to. The next change might be a more joyful one, but no less complicated.

In an interview with EW, Clark Gregg brought up the possibility of burgeoning romance between Coulson and Ming-Na Wen's Agent May.

"There seems like there might be some long-gestating sparks happening a little closer to home," he tells EW. "I'm just going on what I've been reading [in the scripts]. Something is different between them. I don't know, something's going on. They're just a little different with each other and I can't quite figure out what it is. They're either becoming even better friends after all they've been through or, I don't know, I keep feeling like some of these lines are a little flirtatious."

The two have been through similar experiences, including their death's and sudden returns.

"It certainly has had some kind of impact on Agent May," Gregg says. "Coulson's very curious about her experience because now one of the people he cares most about in the world is one of the very few people in the world who has had a similar been dead for a while, come back to life scenario. That becomes something that he's very curious about with her."

"There are things happening in the coming episodes that give each of them deeper awareness of how much they mean to each other."

Fans might start to see these developments in future episodes, including the newest episode The Good Samaritan, which is written by executive producer Jeffrey Bell and directed by Billy Gierhart.

In Agents of SHIELD Season 4, in light of the Sokovia Accords, and with Hydra obliterated, SHIELD has been legitimatized again and no longer needs to operate in the shadows. Since the world presumes that Coulson is dead, the organization needed a new Director (Jason O'Mara) to be the face of the organization. Coulson finds himself back in the role as an agent and teamed with Mack (Henry Simmons), and together they are tasked with tracking down and confirming the presence of Enhanced people, aka Inhumans. They have been trying to track down and capture Daisy (Chloe Bennet), aka Quake, who has gone rogue in an attempt to atone for sins from the past. But with the world believing that Daisy is a dangerous outlaw who has taken down banks and bridges, the new Director has no qualms about taking her down for good. Agent May (Ming-Na Wen) is tasked with training specialist strike teams, and Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) have taken a big step forward in their relationship. But with Simmons' new promotion as Special Advisor to the Director in Science and Technology, Fitz, as well as her former team members, finds it hard to confide in or trust her since she's now the Director's confidant.

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, "The Good Samaritan," will air on Tuesday, November 1 on ABC.
