Today, pre-screenings of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will finally get underway in the U.S, and fans are hyped for the debut for more than one reason. The return of Star-Lord and Baby Groot has got audiences chittering, but excitement over Stan Lee's cameo in the sequel has gradually been grabbing attention. Reports have signaled the comic creator's appearance gives credence to a long-held fan-theory which Marvel fans have championed online. And, in a recent interview, the head of Marvel Studios is teasing fans a bit about Lee's role in the company's cinematic universe.
Speaking with Slash Film, Feige opened up about the art of making compelling post-credits scenes. And, during the talk, the president confessed Stan Lee's new cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is his favorite to-date.
For those of you unfamiliar with the post-credits scene, the footage shows Lee dressed in an astronaut's suit while he talks with a group of Watchers. The wise aliens are seen listening to Lee as he regales the ancient beings with tales he has gathered during his years in the MCU. The clip seems to confirm that Lee has played the same character through the films, and Feige has confirmed that much is true.
"[It's] certainly something to be considered. We shot a lot in that moment when he came down to Atlanta to film that," Feige said.
In a previous press junket, the president went on to further clarify the fan-theory's canon status. "Yes, we always thought it would be fun. Stan Lee clearly exists, you know, above and apart from the reality of all the films. So the notion that he could be sitting there on a cosmic pit stop during the jump gate sequence in Guardians was something very fun – James had that idea and we shot that cameo and loved it so much, you know, you see it a couple of times in the movie."
Still, the cameo nod has left fans with a big question: just who is Lee playing if he is able to thread throughout the MCU. During his chat with Slash Film, Feige teased that the Cameo King is an entity which fans haven't seen before in the MCU.
"Let's just say he, Stan Lee, is certainly is a different type of entity within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who can hang out with the Watchers and tell them stories about all his cameos," Feige hinted.
