While Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters this weekend, fans have already gotten acquainted with the character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) made his MCU debut in last year's Captain America: Civil War, and already had quite a reputation.
In Civil War, Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), approaches Peter after finding a viral video of him saving a bus in his makeshift Spider-Man costume. And according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, there was an effort to establish Spider-Man as a sort of viral hero within the actual MCU - an effort that is continued through Homecoming.
"That was sort of our theory," Feige explained to Fandango, "in that if somebody in costume swung down from a building and stopped the bus, it would get caught [on camera]."
These references are already seen in Homecoming's promotional material, with Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) proclaiming that Peter is 'the Spider-Man from Youtube.'
Feige also hinted that not every MCU citizen believes that the Spider-Man videos are authentic.
"[In Civil War] Tony realized it wasn't fake," Feige explained, "that there was something worth investigating."
The promotional campaign for Homecoming has earned its own share of viral videos as well, with a viral coffee shop prank, as well as Holland's memorable entrance at the film's premiere. This has led to the film gaining an impressive presence on social media before its release this weekend.
Spider-Man: Homecoming premieres in theaters July 7.
