With Spider-Man: Homecoming currently tearing up the box office, Marvel Studios has yet another success under its belt of blockbusters. The production company is basically printing money at this point with Sony's third iteration of Spider-Man blowing past all projections, pleasing fans and critics left and right.
This latest success establishes the superhero shared universe as an unprecedented success, pushing the MCU's total box office gross past $12 billion worldwide over 16 movies.
That's an insane amount of money for a production company whose first movie came out just nine years ago.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is a little different, as parent company Disney doesn't make any money from the box office haul. The deal with Sony meant that the Spidey rights holders contracted Marvel Studios to make their movie and establish the character in their universe, with Sony keeping the profits.
However, Disney still holds merchandising rights for the character so its definitely a win-win scenario for the companies.

But the total still counts toward the cumulative total for Marvel Studios movies. Four movies have made over a billion dollars each (The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3, and Captain America: Civil War), and Spider-Man: Homecoming has a real shot at joining that club due to the character's immense popularity worldwide.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently sitting at about $257 million worldwide in its opening weekend and has yet to open in China, Japan, France, Germany, or Spain.
Expect that total to grow even more by the end of the year when the highly anticipated Thor: Ragnarok opens in theaters.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is in theaters now.
