The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a massive, multimedia, shared-universe experiment that spans cinema, television, and streaming services.
With so many different movies and television series coming out throughout the year, it can be difficult to track just how many characters make up the "cast" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Reddit user potrap has compiled a helpful list all of the "superheroes" who appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016. The list covers the second half of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD Season 3 and the first half of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD Season 4, Agent Carter Season 2, Marvel's Daredevil Season 2, Marvel's Luke Cage Season 1, Captain America: Civil War, and Doctor Strange.
Potrap's definition of "superhero" for the purposes of this list may cause some contention:
"I used the rough definition of superhero as a character who has a technological enhancement or inherent ability giving them superhuman combat skills, or advanced fight training giving them equivalent combat skills (super), and behaves in a way most recognize as good or against evil and usually in line with the protagonists' goals (hero). For example, Steve Rogers has inherent superhuman abilities but Natasha Romanoff has trained for so long she can take on many of the same enemies; Sharon Carter has the hand-to-hand skills to take on Bucky whereas Everett Ross does not; and Bobbi and May have successfully fought Kree and Inhumans while Hunter has only defeated human mooks."
Here's the resultant list:
- A.I.D.A. (AOS4)
- The Ancient One (DS)
- James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes / Winter Soldier (CACW)
- Clint Barton / Hawkeye (CACW)
- Johnny Blaze / Ghost Rider (AOS4) - seen but not identified
- Luke Cage (LC)
- Agent Lincoln Campbell / Sparkplug (AOS3)
- Margeret "Peggy" Carter (AC2)
- Sharon Carter / Agent 13 (CACW)
- Frank Castle / The Punisher (Dd2)
- Agent Phil Coulson (AOS)
- Carl "Crusher" Creel / Absorbing Man (AOS3)
- Doctor Andrew Garner / Lash (AOS3)
- Joey Guttierez (AOS3)
- James Taylor James / Hellfire (AOS) - borderline
- Agent Daisy Johnson / Quake (AOS)
- Detective Mercedes "Misty" Knight (LC)
- Scott Lang / Ant-Man (CACW)
- Director Jeffrey Mace / Patriot (AOS4)
- Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch (CACW)
- Agent Melinda May (AOS)
- Karl Mordo (DS) - borderline
- Barbara "Bobbi" Morse / Mockingbird (AOS3)
- Matt Murdock Esq. / Daredevil (Dd2)
- Elektra Natchios (Dd2)
- Thor Odinson (DS)
- Peter Parker / Spider-Man (CACW)
- Roberto "Robbie" Reyes / Ghost Rider (AOS4)
- James "Rhodey" Rhodes / War Machine (CACW)
- Agent Elena "Yo-Yo" Rodriguez / Slingshot (AOS)
- Steve Rogers / Captain America (CACW)
- Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow (CACW)
- Tony Stark / Iron Man (CACW)
- Stick (Dd2)
- Doctor Stephen Strange (DS)
- T'Challa / Black Panther (CACW)
- The Vision (CACW)
- Jason Wilkes (AC2)
- Sam Wilson / Falcon (CACW)
- Wong (DS)
Honorary mention to Eden Fesi / Manifold (AOS3), who was mentioned and technically appeared in the episode but was not seen.
Potrap's criteria certainly make for some inconsistencies. Misty Knight, as she appears in Luke Cage Season 1, is certainly no more powerful than Lance Hunter, yet Misty makes the list while Hunter is left off. The criteria also only seem to value physical abilities, leaving characters like Fitz, Simmons and Mack from Agents of SHIELD, who rely on their intelligence but have proven to be just as heroic as their SHIELD teammates, unrecognized.
Still, as a quick summary, potrap's list works well enough, counting 40 superheroes in the MCU in 2016. With so much coming in 2017 for Marvel, it will be interesting to see how this list expands in a year's time.
