Tom Hardy is Venom, we know that much. But will his portrayal of the character be residing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
It's a question which has had a flip-flopping answer throughout the press tour for Spider-Man: Homecoming which is a joint venture between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures in the wake of an historic deal which first brought the two studios together for Captain America: Civil War.
First, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige firmly ruled out the possibility. “For now, there is no plan for Venom in the MCU. It’s a Sony project.” The "for now" in reference was apparently a very brief time span as literally the next day Sony Pictures head Amy Pascal ruled otherwise.
"Both movies will now take place in the world that we are creating for Peter Parker," Pascal said. "They'll be adjuncts to it, they may be different locations, but it will still all be in the same world. And they will be connected to each other as well."
There was a bit of speculation regarding whether or not Pascal misinterpreted the question or she meant what she was saying, despite a surprised look on Feige's face as he sat beside her. Either way, Spider-Man actor Tom Holland has officially weighed in on the subject during an exclusive interview with ComicBook.com.
"Everyone's asking this question, man. It's never happening," Holland said of Venom popping up in one of his future movies. He does, however, have an interesting perspective on future villains for Spider-Man movies, which promise to be a trilogy with the actor. "There are so many. I'm so excited to explore new villains. I want to see people we haven't seen before because Spider-Man, of all characters, probably has the most villains and it only makes sense to explore new ones."
If Holland's sentiments of Venom "never" coming into a Spider-Man movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are true, it's surely a bit of a disappointment for loyal fans of the Marvel characters. Considering how well received Spider-Man: Homecoming has already been from fans and critics privileged to have seen it in advance, the Venom film would likely be a sure fire hit with similar creative direction.
