The latest film in the Fast and the Furious franchise is speeding toward another record-breaking opening box office haul, despite being unable to escape the shadow of is predecessor. But the numbers aren't anything to balk at: The Fate Of The Furious is still among the franchise's most successful films.
Analysts are expecting the film to barely break the century mark, raking in $100.1 million at the domestic box office. If you've been keeping track, you'll know that Universal's high-octane racing-turned-heist series has always been an international bet, where the film is expected to take in between $526 million to $529 million in the global market.
The international haul (sans domestic) is already at $430.4 million, meaning if the Rock and Vin Diesel punch-and-race film meets its projections it could break some previously held records. This would put the film in the running to become the highest global opening, beating Jurassic World ($525.5 million) and potentially even Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($528.9 million).
Deadline reports that the film is the highest grossing opening for a black director, beating F. Gary Gray's own previous three-day record with Straight Outta Compton, which made $60.2 million.

Though the Fate of the Furious will not beat Furious 7's domestic opening, the numbers are nothing to balk at. It's still on its way toward becoming a global phenomenon and boasts an A-ranked CinemaScore record. Audiences are more and more likely to head to theaters for what's sure to be a profitable run at the box office.
After eight films over the last sixteen years, the franchise still has a lot left in the tank and is sure to see the next two films in their planned trilogy—though at this point, it seems doubtful the Fast & Furious series will end, despite Diesel's plans.
Universal has one of the most successful properties under their belt. Expect them to ride that out until it's running on fumes.
The Fate of the Furious is now playing in theaters.
