The budget for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is €197 million, making it the most expect French film ever produced by a significant margin, topping the previous most expensive French film Asterix and the Olympic Games and its €78 million budget. Besson's own The Fifth Element is the next on the list with a budget of €75 million.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets has been in development since 2012 but entered principal photography in France in January 2016.

In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha—an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is written and directed by Luc Besson, based on the French science fiction comics series Valérian and Laureline, written by Pierre Christin and illustrated by Jean-Claude Mézières. The film stars Dane DeHaan as Valerian and Cara Delevingne as Laureline, with Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Herbie Hancock, Kris Wu, and Rutger Hauer.
The Valerian and Laureline has won numerous industry awards, including the prestigious Grand Prix de la ville d'Angoulême. The series was also adapted into an animated show in 2007, titled Time Jam: Valerian & Laureline.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will open in theaters on July 21, 2017.
