No one ever accused Michael Bay of being subtle or of making nuanced motion pictures. But the director of the Transformers saga is pretty blatant when it comes to product placement and advertising in his movies.
It almost makes you wonder whether you’re watching a movie or a subliminal suggestion to drive your Chevy Camaro to the nearest 7-Eleven and purchase a case of Miller Genuine Draft.
A new video has attempted to count up every instance of Bay’s use of product placement throughout his filmography, courtesy of Screen Crush who performed the thankless duty of watching every Michael Bay movie. It’s an egregious number and we don’t want to spoil it for you, just watch the clip and find out for yourself.
As the video notes, Bay used to direct commercials before he made the leap to movies. he’s actually directed some famous commercials from the ‘90s, including the infamous “Got Milk” ad that featured Alexander Hamilton before he became a rap superstar.
It’s almost like it’s a bad habit that he can’t break at this point — a bad habit that probably finances a good portion of his explosion-porn movies.
The Transformers movies are the most egregious examples considering they’re basically two-hour car commercials without all of the destroyed Bud Light trucks and Samsung phones egregiously taking up the screen. Seriously, it’s like he mandates the cinematographers to frame each shot based on how many logos they can fit in.
Of course the video stops short of logo-checking the latest Transformers movie, which just came out in theaters last week. That will probably tack on another 50 or 60, at least, just in gratuitous car shots alone.
