Jolie's been in the news for her high-profile split from actor Brad Pitt, which has devolved quickly into a rather nasty divorce proceeding. With all of that chaos starting to settle, Jolie is starting to focus on her next career steps, and despite her previous track record, a sequel might be in the running. According to THR, Jolie is considering joining Disney's Maleficent sequel, a project that Disney has wanted to move forward with since the original met success at the box office.
The actress has two projects for Universal in development, including an adaptation of Catherine The Great And Potemkin: The Imperial Love Affair and a World War II drama titled The Spy Who Loved Me. Neither of these have the packed in star power that Maleficent 2 would command, and taking the role would be a fantastic way to kick off this new chapter of her career and get her right back into the spotlight.
Jolie has a habit of not doing sequels, passing on several like Wanted 2 and a Salt followup. Back when she was cranking films out a brisk rate that wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but now that she's been absent from theaters for a bit, going with a Disney-powered blockbuster might just be the thing she needs to get back into the swing of things.
Maleficent was a big success for Disney, as it made $241 million domestically and brought in over $758 million worldwide, eclipsing the film's $180 million dollar budget. While some weren't keen on the changes to the character's history, Jolie's performance as Maleficent received widespread acclaim from audiences and critics alike.
Hopefully, Jolie will eschew her normal sequel tendencies and give fans one more outing as the iconic Disney villain.
