Evil Dead Remake, Jurassic Park Reissue Set to Top Box Office

Jurassic Park

Who says there's nothing original in Hollywood anymore? Well, moviegoers, for one; they're turning out in strong numbers for the remake of Sam Raimi's classic camp-horror film Evil Dead, with that movie expected to draw nearly $30 million while Jurassic Park 3D (a reissue of the original Jurassic Park, not a new film) took the #2 spot for Friday, although it's not expected to come in second for the full weekend. Coming in at #2 should be G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which is on pace for around $22 million. Behind that is The Croods, Dreamworks's surprise animated hit with around $21 million, at which point Jurassic Park's expected $18 million haul comes into play. Rounding out the top five should be Tyler Perry's Temptation.

The strong performance of Temptation is likely a welcome surprise for the Perry camp who, in spite of developing a new TV series for Oprah Winfrey's OWN, tanked at the box office with his last outing, an adaptation of James Patterson's Alex Cross novels. The Host, the latest film to be adapted from the novels of Twilight author Stephenie Meyer, sunk like a stone this week, taking a 67% hit off its already-dismal opening weekend. The film will finish in the top ten, but just barely, and at roughly $15 million through the first two weeks, the odds of the film making back its $40 million production budget are slim to none. A fourth Jurassic Park film is on the way soon from Safety Not Guaranteed director Colin Trevorrow, while a strong performance at the box office has earned G.I. Joe: Retaliation a third installment. The Evil Dead franchise, meanwhile, apparently has a lot of believers at Sony; not only are they envisioning the remake as a trilogy (like the originals were), but those sequels will be developed on a parallel track with Army of Darkness 2, picking up from the third film in the original Evil Dead trilogy and bringing back original star Bruce Campbell.
