Gotham TV Series Not Set In Batman Vs. Superman Cinematic Universe

Fox's upcoming Gotham TV series will not be a part of the same universe as Warner Bros. upcoming Batman vs. Superman film, according the Fox's Chairman of Entertainment, Kevin Reilly. Speaking at yesterday's Television Critics Awards press tour, Reilly clarified to IGN that Fox had gotten the rights to the entire Batman mythos and that the Gotham television series would operate completely independently of the Warner Bros. films. "We own all the rights. That's what we're licensing," he said. "They brought us the entire franchise for a very healthy license fee. We're not negotiating this piece meal. We have all of the underlying Batman rights for the entire franchise for this series…That's what I like about this, it's not some sort of adjunct companion series. This is the Batman franchise, just backing it up. I think that gives it a real focus as to what the show is about and what stories we're telling." Reilly went on to say that the two companies will work together to ensure they are not stepping on each toes when marketing the two separate properties, but they would not be interconnected. "Warner Bros. manages the entire franchise and it's one of their top global franchises of all, so there will be an awareness of both and we'll have to coordinate when we're in the market place, but the productions are not piggy-backing off one another." The Gotham TV series pilot is currently in the casting phase of production. Superman vs. Batman has a scheduled theatrical release date of July 17, 2015.
