By Grabthar's hammer! Yippee ki-yay! When we spoke to Red co-creator Cully Hamner in late 2011, he indicated that, as far as he knew, Red 2 was on a fast track and would be made soon. Well, late last night the news broke at The Hollywood Reporter that Dean Parisot, the filmmaker behind cult favorite Galaxy Quest, has joined the project as director. Parisot, who has also directed recent episodes of fan-favorite TV series The Good Wife and Justified, will direct returning stars Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren, according to numerous reports.

The first film's story revolves around a number of retired (and extremely dangerous) spies who pull together when one of them is targeted for assassination by a corrupt politician. While Red was based on a comic book by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner, which has since had a prequel published, the second film will reportedly be an original script with no connection to the first film's source material. The story was developed by Erich and Jon Hober, who also adapted the first screenplay. The film will be produced by Summit Entertainment, a division of Lionsgate which also produces the Twilight films, and should start shooting in early 2012, shortly after Willis wraps shooting Die Hard 5.
