Roberto Orci Off Star Trek 3

Roberto Orci will no longer direct Star Trek 3, according to a report at Deadline.

The report indicates that Edgar Wright, who left Ant-Man due to creative differences with Marvel brass, is one of the candidates to take on the job. Wright, of course, directed a single shot of Star Trek Into Darkness. 

"There are 2120 shots in Star Trek Into Darkness. I directed one of them. Looking forward to seeing the other 2119," said the U.K.-based filmmaker behind Shaun of the Dead.

So...continuity?

Orci, who co-wrote the first two films in the JJ Abrams-directed Star Trek reboot with longtime collaborator Alex Kurtzman, was set to make his directorial debut with Star Trek 3, going so far as to drop out of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers to make it happen. He'll reportedly remain on board as a producer.

The plan had been to go into production in 2015 so that the third, as-yet-untitled Star Trek movie could be in theaters for the fiftieth anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series in 2016. No word on whether a directorial change will slow that down, but it seems unlikely.

Orci also recently exited the Amazing Spider-Man franchise.
