Stan Lee on Edgar Wright's Ant-Man Departure: "I'm Sorry About That...He Was So Excited"

While Stan Lee remains the public face of Marvel Comics years after his official departure from the company, there are times when he's called upon to comment on bad news to which he's not actually very connected. Such was the case today at the Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. exhibit in New York City, where Lee was quizzed about the departure of Ant-Man director Edgar Wright, who supposedly walked off the film after major changes were made to his script by studio higher-ups. Lee, as you might expect, was diplomatic about the situation, expressing his disappointment that the relationship didn't work out but careful not to cast even a little bit of blame around, and to say that the film will still be good when it eventually comes. "I'm sorry about that. I had lunch with him, I met him, he was so excited about it," Lee told ScreenCrush. "That was over a year ago. But they're still making the movie I understand, and it'll be a great movie because, again, the special effects you can imagine them – a guy this big crawling around the room, people about to step on him. It'll be great." Wright has been involved with the Ant-Man project for almost nine years and it's not entirely clear the sequence of events that led to his choice to leave it, or whether they will attempt to use a version of his script with the new filmmakers. Some rumors centered around Wright's pace being too slow for Marvel's liking, but other reports have refuted that notion completely, saying that it was all about script rewrites.
