With a month to go until opening, THR reports that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has already eclipsed $50 million in ticket sales. The previous record, at half that - $25 million - was held by 2012's The Dark Knight Rises. There are still 29 ticket-buying days left before the film's official opening on December 18, 2015.

To put that into some perspective, those ticket sales alone, $50 million, would put The Force Awakens at the eighteenth largest opening of 2015. That's if it sold zero more tickets between now and opening. It puts it within ten million of the top ten. $50 million puts it within six million of Fantastic Four's entire run in theaters, and puts it above other major releases like Jupiter Ascending, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and Pan.

Where will Star Wars: The Force Awakens land once it's released? It's very early to make a specific estimate, but most experts say it'll be not just the biggest release of the year, but quite possibly the biggest of box office history.

We'll see on December 18, 2015.
