Star Wars: The Force Awakens Might Get Added To Critics' Choice Nominations

The problem with end of the year awards nominations is that they tend to get announced before the actual end of the year.

That's the cause of the problem the Broadcast Film Critics Association finds itself dealing with now. The organization announced the nominees for the 2015 Critics' Choice Awards earlier this week, before the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now that the new Star Wars is here, and being met with a near universally positive critical reception, the BFCA has taken unprecedented action in announcing that it will poll its members on whether The Force Awakens should be added to the nominee list as a late addition.

The BFCA usually doesn't have this problem, as its members almost always see every theatrical release early, but Disney's refusal to grant critics early access to the secretive movie created an unorthodox conflict. The BFCA decided to go ahead and announce its nominees on schedule, without including The Force Awakens for consideration.

On the other hand, the American Film Institute wasted no time in naming Star Wars: The Force Awakens one of its top ten films of the year.
