Ridley Scott's The Martian wasn't able to defy Gravity, but it did come in second place to it on the all-time October openings list.
The film grossed $55 million domestically this weekend, a win for Scott, whose Prometheus was critically and financially not as beloved as the studio had hoped.
Coming in second was last week's #1, Hotel Transylvania 2, with $33 million. Sicaro took third with $12 million, followed by The Intern and The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials.
The Martian isn't expected to retain the #1 spot next week, with Pan heading to theaters ahead of the holiday movie rush.
