If you are a comic book fan, Warner Bros. announcement to delay Batman Vs. Superman likely hit pretty hard. If you are a Warner Bros. stockholder, then Warner Bros. announcement likely hit even harder. For the past decade, Warner Bros. highest-grossing movie of the year at the U.S. box office has been either a DC Comics or a Harry Potter film. For the next two years, Warner Bros. is scheduled to release nothing from their two most successful franchises. Of course, Warner Bros. didn't have much choice in regards to Harry Potter since that franchise wrapped up, and it was only recently that Warner Bros. negotiated a deal to make Harry Potter spinoff movies. However, it is rather surprising that Warner Bros. didn't have more DC Comics properties lined up, beyond the now delayed Batman Vs. Superman. Looking at Warner Bros. film schedule for 2014 and 2015, the studio has a surprising lack of sequels scheduled in a box office world that is becoming increasingly dominated by sequels. In fact, the biggest franchise film that Warner Bros. has on its schedule for the next two years is The Hobbit: There and Back Again, which is the last film in that franchise. Looking at Warner Bros. ten highest grossing domestic movies of all time, all but one of them (Inception) was a franchise film based on DC Comics, Harry Potter, or The Hobbit properties. With The Hobbit wrapping up and no solid release dates for Harry Potter spinoff movies, Warner Bros. needs its DC Comics properties to succeed more than ever. Highest Grossing Warner Bros.
