While his live-action cult-hit Community has lost two of its leading men this season and isn't expected to be picked up for its fateful sixth season (or a movie, even!), Dan Harmon is guaranteed to have at least one series on the air next season after Adult Swim picked up Rick and Morty for a second season. One of the network's first big swings at prime time, the show was co-created by Justin Roiland, who voices both main characters. The series is kind of an odd couple comedy, following the exploits of a genius inventor and his dim-witted grandson, which (after a few familial twists and turns) is a strategy that's worked pretty well over the years on Futurama. The parallels to Back to the Future are obvious just by looking at the characters, but as you'd expect from Adult Swim, it's not exactly the middle-of-the-road approach to comedy that a PG movie offers. "I am excited to make as much Rick and Morty as Adult Swim allows, and I'm relieved to be in a time slot of no strategic value to CBS," said co-creator and executive producer Dan Harmon. "I am humbled and super excited by the positive response to the show, and we have no shortage of ideas for future episodes," said co-creator and executive producer Justin Roiland. According to Turner Networks (Cartoon Network's parent company), the first season to date of Rick and Morty has outperformed direct competition in its time period by double-digits across all targeted demos.  Compared to Comedy Central, MTV, Nick at Nite and FX, Rick and Morty at 10:30 p.m. beats its competition across the board—among adults 18-34 between 25% and 113%, among adults 18-24 between 14% and 148%, and among adults 18-49 between 22% and 83%.
