American Sniper Shoots Down Box Office Competition; Johnny Depp's Mortdecai Bombs

Clint Eastwood's American Sniper, which stars Bradley Cooper ("Guardians Of The Galaxy") as U.S. military's deadliest sharpshooter Chris Kyle, is on the cusp of $200 million at the North American box office after another strong weekend. On Friday it pulled in $18 million and that puts its weekend estimates at a hefty $61.2 million. Wow!

In other news, Johnny Depp's new film Mortdecai is bombing this weekend. In its debut weekend it will finish in 8th place with a measly $4.6 million. Ouch! Lionsgate Entertainment's R-rated caper comedy, which also stars Iron Man star Gwyneth Paltrow, will have to depend on the international box office to recoup its budget. Depp's career is circling the drain. This will be his third straight box office failure. 2014's Transcendence cost $100 million, but only made $23 million at the domestic box office. The there was 2013's The Lone Ranger, which grossed $89 million domestically, but it cost at least $250 million.

Jennifer Lopez's thriller The Boy Next Door will debut in second place. The film earned $5.56 million on Friday and is now estimated for a $15.3 million weekend.

Audiences gave The Boy Next Door a B- CinemaScore, and Mortdecai received a C+ CinemaScore.
